Baptisms

We are delighted that you are considering bringing your child for baptism in the parish of wimbledon

Many families choose to baptise their child in the Parish of Wimbledon and so we do advise planning in advance. Please read through the guidance below.

  • This will depend where you are holding the baptism; there may be meetings and/or baptism surgeries depending on how each church organises baptisms. Please refer to the church websites.

  • Yes, of course, but we do encourage all parents to become involved in the life of the church and make a firm commitment to bring their child up in the Christian fait

  • Our churches need many volunteers to make the churches run smoothly in a vast array of ways. From only 1 hour a month you can make a huge difference to your church. Speak to the clergy at your Baptism meeting.

  • You would either need to start attending church, or get a letter of permission from the Vicar of the parish you live in. You can find out which parish you live in at www.achurchnearyou.com.

  • Please speak to the clergy of your chosen church. The baptisms usually are part of a Sunday service.

  • No, we cannot guarantee a private baptism. However, we do not have more than three families, or four children being baptised at the same time, which ever is the fewer.

  • No charge is made for baptism but you are welcome to make a donation to church funds.

  • Godparents must have been baptised, as Parents and Godparents make promises to bring children up in the Christian faith. Parents do not need to be baptised.

  • If they are available, this should be possible please check on your church website.

  • If due to unforseen circumstances a godparent is unable to attend the baptism, it is possible to do this by proxy. Please speak to the clergy.
